Muttiah Muralitharan ODI Statistical Review 10/02/2009
Muttiah Muralitharan took 1/66 in the ODI against India at R.Premadasa Stadium in a match on the 5th February 2009. It took his aggregate to 503 wickets, and surpassed Wasim Akram's record of 502 wickets, and became the leading wicket taker. See Players taking 300 Career Wickets
I have listed below some of Muttiah Muralitharan's statistical achievements.
He reached 503 wickets in his 327th match, See Bowling-Progressive Average and Aggregate compared to the 356 matches Wasim AKram took reach 502 wickets.
His current average of 22.74 is the thirteenth lowest overall, and the second lowest among players who have taken 300 or more wickets. See Players taking 50 Wickets at an Average of 25.00 or Less
Average of under 25.0 against thirteen of the seventeen countries whom he has played. See Performances by Opponent at All Grounds Only his averages against Australia (31.08), India (30.8), and the West Indies (27.2) are significantly below his overall average of 22.74.
He has taken four wickets or more in a match on twenty four occasions which is the second highest. See Players taking 4 Wickets in a Match on 5 or more occasions
Has taken 40 wickets or more in a calendar year in 2001, and 2003. His highest return was 56 wickets in 2001. See Players 40 Wickets in a Calendar Year
His average when playing at home (24.15) is slightly worse than when playing away (22.24). See Performances in Sri Lanka Versus All Countries
Muralitharan's dismissal statistics reveal that he was most successful against middle order batsmen. He dismissed Wasim Akram (PAK) 8 times, and J N Rhodes (SAF) and J D P Oram (WIN) both 7 times. See Analysis of Wickets Taken Against All Countries
Muralitharan's best performance was 7/30 against India at Sharjah Stadium on the 27th October 2000. This is the fourth best overall, and second best by a Sri Lankan player. See Players Taking 6 wickets in a Match
Muralitharan's economy rate of 3.89 is the best of any current player. See Most Economical Bowlers (Min 2000 balls bowled) He has on two occasions conceded less than 10 runs from 10 overs. See Bowling 10 or more Overs in Innings with Economy Rate of 1.00 or better.
The dismissal graph indicates that most of his dismissals are caught – 45.7% which is what you would expect for a spin bowler. He has bowled 23.2% of his victims, which is similar to other spin bowlers such as Anil Kumble (IND), and Sanath Jayasuriya (SRL). See Graphical Analysis of Dismissals Bowling Against All Countries
The wickets taken by batting order graph indicates that most of his dismissals are taken in the middle order (4-7) 51.1%, which is what you would expect with a spin bowler who usually commences bowling after 15 overs. He has taken 24.2% in the top order (1-3), and 24.8% in the tail(8-11). See Graphical Analysis of Wickets Taken by Batting Order Notable comparisons with other spin bowlers who have taken 300 wickets are: A Kumble (IND) Top Order (1-3) 30.6%, Middle Order (4-7) 51.3%, Tail (8-11) 18.1%. S T Jayasuriay (SRL) Top Order (1-3) 19.8%, Middle Order (4-7) 51.8%, and Tail 28.4%.
Muralitharan and D P M Jayawardene combined to take 25 dismissals, which is the second highest. See Most Successful Bowler/Fielder Combinations
Muralitharan has bowled 2,952.1 overs which is second to Wasim Akram 3,031. See Players Bowling 1000 Overs
Lesser achievement.
Conceded 80 runs in a match – 0/99 v AUS at Sydney Cricket Ground on 12/2/2006. See Players Conceding 80 Runs in a Match That was the only occasion he conceded more than 70 runs in a match without taking a wicket, which is amazing considering the number of overs bowled. See Players Conceding 70 runs in a Match without Taking a Wicket
Summary. Muralitharan’s ODI performances have been remarkably consistent during his sixteen year career, and I believe his wicket taking records are unlikely to be be surpassed.
